Design and produce your own fashion show! The course is a creative class where students will walk though the art of fashion illustration, business of fashion, garment production* and history of fashion. Students will produce a garment throughout the course and work together to make recycled clothing as their final project.
*Sewing experience is recommended but not required.
Long overview
This course is an introduction to the fashion industry, providing an overview of how the fashion business works, from raw materials to the production and retail distribution of fashion goods. We will look at areas of fashion including but not limited to production, predicting consumer demand, buying, pricing, retailing, and promoting fashion. The class is separated into three portions; a beginning lecture on history of fashion, followed by a close up look into the life of fashion professionals and finished with a design and development lab where students will have the opportunity to design an end of the semester fashion show.
About the history portion
The history portion of the class will introduction to costume from ancient times to the twenty-first century. Clothing is used as a universal means of symbolizing roles and social position fashion uses clothing to communicate values and attitudes. Students will learn how costume is a reflection of trends in technology, music, literature, art, interior design and social values.
Spotlight preview -Marketing
Using blend of both traditional and digital media we will learn about how to get a message to consumers and how to market to their individual needs. Students learn to develop an integrated marketing plan through a combination of advertising, direct mail, sales promotion, publicity, public relations, personal selling, special events, and visual merchandising.
Design and Development
This portion of the class is a fashion design laboratory. It will provide the student the opportunity to develop skills learned in the classroom and apply them to apparel design course projects. The student will get the chance to create beautiful, unique products out of recycled materials. The class will design a collection of a cohesive of original garments for an end of the semester fashion show.

Influential Films
This list is constructed for an introductory art appreciation class to debate the history of film aesthetics, development of genres, and social impact that film has had on American culture. We will discuss the films at length going over their social impact, message, and delivery. We will watch film clips of most movies on the list along with a few short films. Some of the films have a PG-13 rating and some have an R rating any child or parent who feels uncomfortable watching any of the clips will have the opportunity to skip the clip*
*All R Rated films will be censored and screened for appropriate clips. I will send home reminders of upcoming films parents can email me with any questions on film or class content.
